Thread for posterity and to help someone in the future.
I purchased my car with a dead key remote. After figuring out how to reset the remote, the trunk opening and door unlocking functions worked quite well, but I could not lock the door with the remote. Standing next to the car, inside the car, anything.
Just replaced the batteries yesterday, and lo and behold - it works flawlessly. Not sure why some functions would work and others would not, and I did not get a warning that the batteries in the remote were getting low. But I know they were OLD and I figured 10$ at radio shack was better than 150 at the dealer ;)
