View Full Version : Questions about 98 740iL
uzairah 06-16-2008, 05:50 PM Is 131k miles too much when buying this kind of car? How long do most of these last with "fix it only if it broke" maintance?
And this might sound dumb, but when the seller tries to tell me nothing major has been done to this car, is that a bad sign because something is probably over due and it's gonna hit my wallet hard.
And why are 7 series cheaper than 3 series and 5 series?
project37 06-17-2008, 11:53 AM Hi Uzairah. You said that the car has 131k miles on it but I see you are located in Canada so would it not be kms not miles? Anyway these cars do last for a long time privided you look after the maintenance. The rad, power steering hoses, OSV valve, front end (control arms, tie rod ends, etc.) are some of the things that should be inspected if they have never been replaced before. You should give this thread a read before you look at buying one http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=71177
These cars do cost more to maintain than the 3 or 5 series so that is more so why they cost less. If you need any other info or have any questions send me a PM and we could get together for coffee. As you can see I am also in Edmonton and I have a 1998 740il.

Around 100,000 miles there is a long list of things that need to be replaced, and if they haven't yet then this car will definitely hit your wallet hard.
However, with BMW, high miles doesn't mean it's not worth buying. Once those things get replaced, it will be your favorite car.

uzairah 06-17-2008, 02:10 PM I converted it to miles because most of the people here are from the states so I did it.
Even though maintance is more than a 3 series and 5 series, would you guys still have a 7 series over those 2 instead based on ownership experince and the car it's self? And it's so much more rare to have a 7 series, one of the reasons why I want it.
I already have a E30 325es so if I ever feel like tossing a car around I'll drive that

i love big cars, and to me, i'd rather have a 7 than a 5 or a 3. but i did look at 5's when I was looking for my 7. But hey I also looked at tahoe's, e430's, grand prix's, and grand cherokee's. somehow, i decided on getting a 7.
when i purchased mine, i was looking for one with a mid price and a ton of recent repairs. thats what i found :)
lnxdev 06-17-2008, 04:40 PM I have owned 2 740il and now a 750il. Would not trade it for anything. My wife owns a 540, but I still like driving my 750

I bought my 750iL because I fit in it, and can also carry 3 passengers. A short wheelbase E38 (e.g., 740i) or a 5 series (E39, E60) is a three-seater for me since I am tall and have to move the seat all the way back. But I could almost sit behind myself in the iL. (And if I ever get that cloning machine working, I'll do it!)
If you want "rarer", look for a 750iL. The prices here in the US are only slightly higher than for the 740i/iL. Of course, there's more to break and maintenance is higher, but it's the big dog of the E38 pack.

uzairah 06-18-2008, 02:16 PM A 750 is too much for me, my dad will kick my ass if I bought a V12. A 740i is just right, I'm not too tall (Only 6') and I don't really care if my friends in the back are comfortable or not so even a L is not a big issue.
I'll be working most of the maintance on the car with my dad so I don't really worry much about it plus I won't be going to the dealership for parts, mostly online.
It's just so hard finding a good 740i in Edmonton or even Calgary without a shady owner, are there any other sites to check except kijji, craigslist and autotrader?

Those are basicly the only sites to go to in order to check for cars in the local Alberta region. You could try the buysell website as that is the online site for our local Bargain Finder. I lucked out when I bought mine in Edmonton because I was able to buy it directly from my boss who owned it right from new. Good luck with the E38 hunt!
project37 06-18-2008, 04:54 PM Well there is only 2 listings for an E38 on the Buysell site for Edmonton. See below:
http://www.buysell.com/root/detail/Edmonton/1995_Import_Cars/2124/48505122/95_BMW_740i_4_4L_V8_black_ext_leather.aspx
http://www.buysell.com/root/detail/Edmonton/2000_Domestic_Cars/2014/67562473/2000_BMW_750IL_4dr_Automatic_AWD.aspx
The 2000 BMW 750 is a better deal price wise but does not list the miles on the car. The add shows it as AWD but that is not correct as BMW does not offer the 7 in AWD.
The price on the 1995 BMW 740 is way too high for that year of car and it will only have the 4 liter V8 instead of the 4.4 liter from the newer E38's. You might want to go south of the border and pick one up in the USA and drive it back (save yourself thousands). It seems that the local dealers still think the E38 7 series are worth big bucks.
I just looked at the listings for Calgary and came accross this 2004 745 at a steel of price:
http://www.buysell.com/root/detail/Calgary/2004_Domestic_Cars/2006/68570740/WHITE_2004_BMW_745LI_Sport_Package_Has.aspx
Here is the rest of the Calgary listings from a search for BMW 740:

uzairah 06-18-2008, 06:48 PM The 745i is a scam, way too nice for that price and the email address is in the same format as all the other guys selling top of the line cars for 5k to 10k. They want you to send them your shipping info so ebay can "monitor" the transaction.
Going to the states might not be a bad idea since I'm gonna go vacation in Cali soon so might as well pick one up. I bought a e-book and importing, has anyone imported a 740 from the states on this forum?
How much extra did they have to pay on top of the price of the car?
