Hey guys, I am new to the site and to bmw's. I just bought a 94 318i and I'm working on deleting the fan clutch. Anyway I was wondering what are some other things I should look into because I'm not sure of the exact condition of my "new" car. Thanks for the help.

Where about in South Carolina are you? I'm not too sure about the e36, I don't want to tell you the wrong thing...

Oh ok. I'm up in Clemson for school, so you are about 3 hours from me. Like I said, I don't know too much about the e36, but you should check out the e36 section, they will prolly help you out with any questions you have. :D

I'm curious -- "deleting"? You mean you are disabling the fan clutch?
If so, why? To have it run always?

Apparently the e36's are notorious for having the stock fan clutch quite literally blow up. Some of the fan blades would break and fly around engine bay destroying belts, hoses, radiator and possibly the hood. So the fan clutch delete in my understanding is replacing the stock fan clutch with an electric fan among a few other things, so you don't run into problems later on that are very expensive.

Thanks for the clarification. I had a 97 e36 for 10 years, and it had an electric fan. I know, as it has a relay that keeps the fan running for a few minutes after the car shuts down, to help cool it off. That relay failed, and cause the fan to run always. It was a tricky problem to diagnose as my car would be fine, unless I let it sit un-driven over several days (like a weekend), in which case the battery would go flat. Overnight was OK.

After having to jump-start it about 5 times, I took it into a dealer, who replaced a few unrelated things and gave it back to me. (Poor service dept). When it happened again, I took it to a different dealer, and they found the real problem.

But I do know about how this can be a problem, as I had a 280zt a few years prior, and that one had the fan-clutch self-destruct. I was always puzzled how nylon-plastic fan blades could be slung so hard as to damage my copper radiator core, but the blades themselves weren't damaged. (Plastic vs Copper, and Plastic wone?)

Yea its crazy how the fan just explodes...if you go to the sub form for the e36 the first parked thread is about the fan delete and it is wild to read the different stories of people when shit literally hit the fan
