I have a 2001 740i that began leaking power steering fluid last week. i scheduled an appt for this upcoming friday to get it serviced but as of today i put atf fluid in the the reserve bottle, turned the steering wheel a few times and the fluid drained out under the car. what could be the cause of this problem?

Don't drive your car anywhere.

If you drive your car without enough p/s fluid, you will destroy your p/s pump. And if you have self-leveling suspension, your p/s pump costs $600 for just the part.

So, instead of driving it, spend $100 to tow your car to the mechanic.

This will not come as a surprise for long time owners of seVen series cars, but the p/s hoses and their connections are garbage. If you have just bought a seven, or plan on keeping it for any length of time.....start off your preventive maintenance program by replacing the hoses.

Mine have been replaced twice, both times under warranty, once when I bought the car, and again a few months later when the hoses started leaking again. Dealer had to replace their own shoddy workmanship. Have not had a problem in the last couple of years, but I always look at the garage floor for that tell-tale drip.

looks like i'm having the same issue with mine.. when i started car today, i heard a weird, cyclical rough (almost grinding/whining) noise coming from underneath the hood. as i backed the car out of the garage & turned the wheel heard a definitely loud whir/whine noise. i stopped the car, looked in the parking spot & noticed a oil on the floor, but not a lot. just several small spots - probably just a few ounces altogether.

plik, looks like i'm gonna be using that dandy, fancy picture-laden thread my man, but no beatles! probably some earth, wind & fire? that should make the job go much smoother right? :)

btw, can you use dexron III ATF in this car?

pfffft! ew&f all day dude.... they did the beatles a favor with that remake. :)

anyway, i can not find anywhere (driver's manual, e38, etc.) the specification/recommendation for the power steering fluid. is there some place which lists what fluid is to be used??

Actually, yes. Right on the cap of the reservoir.

I like the Beatles but only in small doses. I remember the first time I head a Beatles song, it was right before the JFK assassination and I will always connect "I want to hold your hand" with that event. Of all the Beatles songs, I like "Hey, Jude" best.

They set standards for other groups to follow, but in doing so, they caused their own music to pale in comparison. Who (other than Indians) would have known of Ravi Shankar if it were not for the Beatles.

Sometimes when i don't warm her up for at least 3 min. when i back up out of my garage and turn to go to the street, when i turn the steering wheel all the way to the right or left, it makes a "ts ts ts" sound, and the wheel shakes abit, but after it warms up it goes away....could that be the oil leak i have on my garage? does that cause it to make that sound?

Recently my wife and I watched Across the Universe (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0445922/), and it was fantastic. What a great Beatle-tribute movie. It was very well directed, and very well performed. As a Beatle fan I was skeptical when it first came out and I wasn't sure if I wanted to see it, but after watching it I immediately went out and bought the soundtrack. It's a great movie.

the cap of my reservoir has no such indication (tho i do recall reading this elsewhere?).. anyway, is dexron III acceptable for the 2001 model? i assumed so...

& i totally agree that the beatles set the standard. they are a little before my time in terms of relating to real life experiences, but i appreciate their history none the less. (tho i still don't know who who ravi shankar is lol!)
no slight against them i actually like their stuff. i just happen to like e,w&f a lot more & for some of the same reasons.

fav beatles song: "yesterday" ;)

I agree the hoses on these cars are absolute garabage. Whatever you do, don't drive the car without fluid in there! The hoses were fairly easy to change. Takes about an 2 hours to do both hoses from the res.

seems in the 2nd thread/writeup, the author made his own hoses??
