So the BT snap in cradle is available for the iphone now. But, it says not for the E38. So they say....They said that for the Razr too.
I'm one of those that was handy with the dremel tool and modified the snap in to fit my e38.

So, who will be the first to buy one and see if it can be modified to fit?
The iphone seems much wider than a razr but I haven't put one up to the other to measure.

I'd like to buy the new iphone but I dont' want to give up my razr if I can't have it docked.

I might bite the bullet and get one to try it if it's compatable with the new 3G iPhone as well

Quit doable one you build a jig for it. Just shipped out the 85th razr mod and the 8th iPhone mod.

I am interested in that, how can I get one for my car?

For the iPhone mod the console eject is all that is required to be modded. Check the post over on bimmerboard for more details. Just to state the obvious for the adapters mods, is that vehicle has been converted to Bluetooth.

I guess I was a a little late on this one. It's the new iphone that got my curious. I guess we wait to see if it's the same dimensions of the current iphone.

cdh, can the current eject box currently modded for the razr be further modified to accept the ipod cradle? Or do I need to start from scratch with a new eject tray?

Sadly, waiting is all we can do for a bit.

Here's a page with the dimensions of the iPhone3G:
http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html

I can't find the dimensions of the current iPhone on Apple's site, but sites like http://www.gsmarena.com/apple_iphone-1827.php have some dimensions listed. The dimensions listed on that page show a <1mm difference in the three measurements, so either it'll be a pretty close fit or the 3rd party measurements are wrong.

On the other hand, there's this: http://www.iphoneatlas.com/2008/06/05/last-minute-3g-iphone-size-changes-thinner-and-shorter/

I find it hard to believe that all the cradles, etc. for the iPhone version 1 would not work on the iPhone 3G, meaning that the dimensions of the 3G are close enough to the original for cradles and adapters. Apple loves having control over all things, but forcing every iPhone user to buy a new docking station, case, etc. would probably cause a lot of ill will among the Apple fanboys.

Having tested an iPhone for the last few months, I'm surprised at how hampered it is with just the standard apps. It's a mediocre phone, and I didn't need another address book/calendar/MP3 device. The touch keyboard is OK, not great, and the lack of tactile feel makes it hard to type quickly like on a Blackberry or Palm.

The browser is great but only on WiFi networks (EDGE is very slow in my area), and even then a well-designed mobile app like Yahoo! Go is almost as good on a Blackberry.

Unlocking the phone (jailbreaking, really) and installing some unauthorized 3rd party apps made it MUCH more useful (e.g., turning off features to save battery life, changing the appearance, etc.). I think the official 3rd party apps will make the new iPhone much more interesting, since the basic suite is pretty much what everyone else has.

+1, been jailbroken for about 8 months. I can't use my iphone any other way...

Depending on how you modified the eject box for the razr. If you left the top of the box rails intact, you just need to machine off about 1/16 of an inch each side to allow the iPhone to fit in the eject box. I did one for a X5 owner who upgraded from the razr to the iPhone that I had previously modified.

I did the mod I believe most people did. Just a couple of notches in the eject box where it interfered with the razr cradle. somebody had done a template for the cutouts that I tried to use but ended up just eyeballing it using them as a visual guide.
Any chance you took pics of the process? And if the new 3G really is slightly smaller, would your experience say the fit is that crucial? Like that article said, there will be lot's of companies "stuck" with parts already sent to production or in stock.

No pics of the process. Maybe when I do the next one I'll take a few. Depending on how far down the side of the eject box you removed material to allow for the razr adapter to fit, you could use a pattern bit in a shaper or router table with an over size bearing to remove material from the top rail. The bearing would ride on the inside of the eject box, spacing the cutting edge out the required amount. I would not recommend this as the plastic is flimsy and your fingers are too close to the bit because you are trying to support the plastic (you can guess how I know this factoid). Best is to rig up a jig/sled to support the top half of the eject box so you can run it by the cutter without the loss of digits. This option also allows you to use either an over size bearing on the pattern bit to follow the eject box or a flush bearing on the bit the follow the edge of the jig.
For size, check for post by trey1966 on the bimmerboard bluetooth forum. He should be getting his modded eject box from me shortly. I believe his plans are to use the iPhone2.
