Is it possible? Silly question, but the transmission and everything will be mounted together, right? Do I need to change the differential together(I so hope not). PLUS, I'm not gonna DIY this plz don't flame me...I have an E46 that is not gonna be mine anymore, but I can use just about any part of it. Anyone have any idea about compatibility between E36 and E46?

Let me rephrase it. Is it gonna be a direct bolt on?

bolt in yes
wire in no

So I'm gonna need the ECU and all the sensors+steering wheel column swapped?

the problem with putting an e46 engine into an e36 chassis, well at least one of the bigger problems, is the e46 uses a different wheel speed sensor for the ecu, your best bet is to cut off the wheel hub system on the e46 and mount it, or find a way to swap the sensor rings, or something along those lines. so that way the computer has something to read. then you need the drive by wire system used in the e46 to install in the e36. it has been done before. you would be better off dropping in the engine, then getting a stand alone system so you dont have to worry about ews and abs and all the sensors that the e36 isnt designed for. you can do it, but its going to cost out the ass and take alot of labor.

i've wanted to put an e46 m3 engine into a e36 for a while, i've done a bit of searching. i think it would be one hell of a car when it was finished.

He said M not S 54.

Basically its not worth the trouble....

I can tell you that the M54B25/30 engines use the same cam carrier as the M50/52 engine family....amoung other simular things I have found:shifty

I would like an M54B30 in an E36 or E30 due to the 70ish lb weight diffrence fromt he alloy block....

It can be done but its not cheap...A guy with a 2002 put an M54B30 in a 2002 and twin turboed it..It was in Roundel sometime last year..SUPER trick little car!

Do you read...basically its not worth the trouble, not cheap, and a waste of time...

Even if you got the M54b25 free you would need the entire car to swap out the engine harness, and then you will need the ETM's for both car to figure out how to integrate the two wiring harness so just the basic stuff works on your dash....

Its just not a viable swap to an E36...Buy an S50 or S52 to put in the car...
