How does it have limited slip? Was this modification done later?

No E39 540i came with a LSD, hence the question.

M5 swap maybe?

I thought the same thing when I first laid drags in my 540. The car has enough torque to make both wheels spin, especially in 2nd gear, so it appears as though it's an LSD.

But if you're sure it's the stock diff then don't bother taking the cover off.

It's definitely open.
