A "CD" based nav unit for your E38 is the MKIII unit, search ebay for MK3 or MKIII. They range from low $300's to $400's. Example, ebay # 170223601527.

A "DVD" based nav unit is the MKIV or MK4, that would cost you more than $500 usually.

Welcome To BimmerForums, Tom! :cool

Just my opinion.... I would look into the MKIV DVD set-up. Check BimmerNav.com (Click Here) (www.bimmernav.com) for their prices on new and remanned units, Widescreens, everything you'll need to either upgrade or install the system into your car. It's not going to be inexpensive... but well worth the price if having a stock (OEM BMW) Navigation is what you're looking for.

The Nav units come with the newest Firmware pre-installed but not the Nav DVD itself (themselves). You can either purchase them from your local BMW Center (Dealership) or order direct from the manufacturer's website (NavTeq.com (Click Here) (http://navteq.com/)). The MKIV, for example, requires the disk (DVD) comparable to the 2006 model X5 (which came with the MKIV Nav).

I purchased a remanned MKIV unit after my stock unit crashed on me a few months ago. The remanned come guaranteed and in excellent (most Like-New) condition so no worries or real "Need" for a new unit. They also run about half the price of the same 'New' MKIV... so check BimmerNav for examples of both and complete install/retro-fit instructions/videos.

Good Luck!
