Hi all, I have a 1976 BMW 2002, 4 speed manual. I'm trying to figure out whether or not I should put in a new clutch or not. Every now and then, while driving, I come to a stop and when I push the clutch and try to put the stick into first, it resists and won't go into first. So I play with the stick a bit and then it finally goes in after a few seconds or so. If I can avoid spending the money on a new clutch I would, maybe the problem is coming from a bushing or something much minor than the clutch? How can I diagnose this problem? :redspot

Hmm... I kinda have the same problem with my Subaru (new clutch 2k ago) but when I come to a stop, I have to throw it in 2nd then quickly into 1st. I guess the gears don't quite line up. Does that work with your '02?

I just replaced the clutch in my '02!! (haven't driven it yet)

its not the clutch its the transmission. have you tried putting it in 2nd before first?

most transmissions do this to make sure you dont put it in first on accident... same with reverse.

Try stepping on the brake while shifting into first.

Double check your slave cylinder while you're at it and make sure your clutch master isn't leaking either.

It's the transmission. You have to put it into 2nd first because going from 4th to 1st put's too much wear on the syncros. Try it and you'll see how easy it is to shift.

My 76', 2002 reacts the same way. The syncros probably are the problem...I am waiting to replace with a 5 speed kit. If not, I will take the time and replace the syncros. This just takes time and some lifts, once you get the transmission diagrams, it is not as intimidating as you think. Let us know.

You should always go into 2nd before 1st, at least with all older cars.
