My 1996 740iL recently went into transmission failsafe mode. I cleared the code (Selector-lever position L2, which apparently means the car senses it is accelerating in neutral or park), and the car was flawless. for two days and multiple drive cycles. I parked it in my driveway (which is inclined) over the weekend, got in monday and can't keep the failsafe program from popping up. Almost instantly after I clear the code, its back. The only accompanying codes are a map cooling activation code for the engine (installing a new thermostat tomorrow morning) and an "intermittent interference" code in the ABS system. I've checked the battery and alternator, all seems well there. The kicker that has me confused is that when the fault initially came up, the gear selector indicator in the cluster was not illuminating the gears as they were engaged. I cleared the code, and it functioned normally. Now they do not function at all, although occasionally R will light up, and a few of the sport modes function intermittently as well. Anyone have any experience with this? Help would be vastly appreciated!! Thanks!
