View Full Version : M3 gets killed by VW Jetta
I'm sorta embarrased to tell this story but here goes. I finally can't take it any more, driving the 87 Volvo 240 station wagon around. My M3 has been sitting in the garage polished, waxed, and covered for over 2 months. In the mean time, everyone including grannies in Buicks have passed me, cut me off, and gave me dirty looks because the Volvo can't keep its speed going up hills.
Enough is enough!
I take the cover off the M3 to reveal its shinny waxed skin. Start the engine up and it fires right up, life is excellent once again :D. I get down to the main street and come to a stop light. I see this guy in an older, boxy body style, Jetta pull up in the left lane. His head is bouncing to some rap music and the tone of his exhaust sounds like someone put a wasp nest in his muffler. He's sitting low on large chrome rims and I just catch a glimpse of the obnoxious rear spoiler.
Anyhow, light turns green and I take off with a normal launch. The guy in the Jetta, matches my speed for a couple of seconds and then punches it. I'm like  and go WOT. He's now about 1/2 car length ahead. I quickly shift into 2nd and the damn ASC turns on. I just watch the Jetta pull away while I'm fighting the gas pedal  . Finally, I get power back and start making up ground fast. I'm almost at his bumper and I'm getting ready to go to third and get my revenge.
I go through the motion of shifting to 3rd and instead I get 5th  . Again I watch the Jetta buzz away. At that point, I just give up because traffic is coming up ahead and there was no way I would have caught the Jetta.
Lesson of the story: Drive the M3 more offen and/or get another stick shift car.
volfman 05-24-2003, 09:04 PM I forgive you, for your name is Roman.
LOL :D thank you master Roman
volfman 05-24-2003, 09:11 PM :) Not to get off topic or anything, but are you Russian by any chance?
I am and a Republican at that :D
volfman 05-24-2003, 09:19 PM Holy shit, a republican from NORCAL? That's pretty impressive. I'm a Republican as well.
Of course, in my opinion most russians SHOULD be republicans. Seeing as theres a reason we left the "motherland". *cough* Communism ---> Socialism ---> democratic party :devillook
LOL...true dat... Are you in SD, SC, or somewhere in between?

You're right Dave. With all the rain we had in NorCal and my work schedule, I've been driving my 110hp, 2 ton Volvo which is also an auto. Gotta get out more in the M.

themadhatter 05-25-2003, 01:27 PM it's all good. now there is another jetta III driver running around telling people how he can spank M3's.
hahahahaha - somebody go to the vortex and check!
ibizam3 05-25-2003, 01:36 PM I say, if something like that happens again, instead of flooring it to catch up with the mofo, just turn into a street, or make a U, and go after him in reverse. That ought to teach him. :complain

MFaust 05-27-2003, 04:20 PM Shifted from 2nd to 5th? HAHAHAHA! It's all good bro! You'll get 'em next time. Chalk one up for VW!!:biglaughb
Thanks guys :D Definitely emberassing but having beat Mustang GTs, Honda 2k, WRXs, C5 and what not, its kinda ironic that I get beat by a 16-17 second car. Time to get back to the track.
krogerBMW 05-27-2003, 06:53 PM Was it a 1.8t. He could have had some mods done to it... that engine does very well with some modifications. I remember just last month at Dent and Dyno fest here in ohio a guy came over from PA with his wife in their VW Bug. Pretty stock looking from the outside... just a DTM exhaust out the back along with some rims and larger breaks. Well on the dyno I think it was the shocker of the day he was running APR stage III. Put down 279whp. I wouldn't be offended If i lost to something of that sort in our M3. Give the guy a thumbs up...unless they are idiots about it. one of my biggest pet peves is when there is a "cheap" car made fast and they have to race everybody to prove a point or will go about talking about your car is slow...
Heck there are DSM's at my college that will walk on the GTS...One kids second gen tallon tsi's turbo its hung like a horse...It will snap your neck once he punches it... Love the car and the feeling of boost...
But they are respectable people not the so called "ricers"
You have a great point but when I went to redline in first I was catching him like he was at a stand still. The shift to second killed me as it took about two seconds to get power back on. I made up ground again fast in 2nd but then the shift to fifth was the coup de gras (sp?), as I watched him pull away while I was bogged down once again.
Basically, it was all driver error on my part :D

Shahbaz - Thanks, but after 10+ years of driving stick, numerous driving events and such, I think I have an idea of how to drive. This thread was to show that driver's do make mistakes and sometimes the guy with the most HP doesn't always win. I'm sure every shift and every oversteer turn you make is executed with the utmost precision and finess. Your smart ass comment is neither productive nor appreciated! Have a nice day.
