View Full Version : did BMW "de-tune" the 2008 335i?
dullgirl 05-28-2008, 12:16 AM i know the car mags were freaking out that BMW was underreporting the h.p. and torque numbers for the 335i, so i'm wondering if anyone has thrown a more recent build car on a dyno to see if they tuned things down to the advertised numbers?
or are they disclosing h.p. and torque as to the pavement numbers? something no other car manufacturer on earth has ever done...lol
e92man 05-28-2008, 11:22 PM the numbers are not down but the march 08 cars are not very tune friendly
GatorM 05-29-2008, 08:48 AM I hope so. That'll make my 07 more valuable.
FLS2K 05-29-2008, 12:49 PM Good question. Surely someone has put an '08 on a dyno. I have a Sept. '07 build and would be curious to know.
e92man 05-29-2008, 01:50 PM i have seen o8 dinos from both the 335 and the 135 and the numbers are fine.
PePsI BlUe E36 06-09-2008, 01:38 PM ive noticed bmw under reports most of they're cars

Can you please explain why?

Updated ECU software to detect piggyback tuning, ie PROCede, Attache, AA, etc. From e90post, they are designed to detect excessive fuel consumption caused by running aftermarket tunes. The also react adversely to implausible wastegate duty cycles by closing throttle and generally acting lame.
In other words, depending on how buddy buddy you are with your SA and how many aftermarket goodies you have, you risk having the warrenty voided.

Thanks for the response.
I've heard rumors of piggyback's being detectable but didn't realize it was actually fact now. I also didn't realize they had an exact date on the build models they started this with. So in other words I better not have my software updated?
GUINNESS 06-11-2008, 09:26 AM If you have an 02 - 03/2008 build date, the safest piggyback right now, from what I'm reading, is the PROCede v3. It is direct plug and play, so you can remove it when it's time for service... and there's some other updates about it that help it not to be detected. Definitely read up on e90post for better answers.
Dinan claims to extend their customers the same warrenty BMW offers if they choose their software. This is a direct flash to the ECU. Apparently there are horror stories of people with Dinan software/parts for the 335, and Dinan hanging them out to dry with warrenty claims.
Just be careful and cover your ass.
Corky71 06-11-2008, 10:06 AM Yeah i've been reading all about the Dinan stuff. My build date is 1/08 and have the SSTT on it. I'll look further into this now, thanks for the heads up.
GUINNESS 06-11-2008, 10:13 AM My fiancee's is an 02/08 build date. I want her getting used to 300hp before adding any performance to it :) She's went from an 04 Elantra GT to this... more than a 150hp/tq increase. We're going all cosmetic mods for now.... stress on "for now". :devillook

The SSTT is claimed to be undetectable even with the new software/models. Search for some vendor posts on the matter here and on the 1-series section.
BlackXI 06-11-2008, 01:08 PM If anyone is intereted - I am selling a SSTT that is only 2 months old. Getting a corporate ride and my wife dosn't need the extra power.

No offense to any of the vendors here but they're really not the ones I would trust this answer too. I remember back when they insisted the Procede wouldn't cause any limp codes either...
scabzzzz 06-12-2008, 11:52 AM Dodge did the same thing when the SRT-4 was introduced. Under reported the HP by almost 20 and the same thing with torque. This isnt new.
I think they do this for insurance company to look at figures, and price accordingly. May also account for the quality of gasoline you're putting in and whats available in your area. Also keep in account, altitudes change Dyno readings and HP figures. So many variables...
