View Full Version : Where to live around redwood shores/Oracle?
hoog23 05-24-2003, 03:21 PM I'm from NY and in early stages of interviewing for a job in Redwood Shores. Where are some nice (affordable?) areas within reasonable commuting distance?
Also - Anyone here work for oracle?
TIA
DakarDave 05-24-2003, 05:38 PM Try looking in belmont, foster city or redwood shores....
-Dave
Bernman 05-24-2003, 06:39 PM There are no "affordable" homes on the peninsula ;)
The East Bay (Castro Valley, Hayward) is slightly more affordable, and as you move further east to Tracy and Manteca, the prices continue to go down.
Even though the economy has plummeted in the country, and in the Bay Area, the housing prices have only leveled off instead of substantially reducing.
Good luck!

umnitza 05-25-2003, 04:48 AM you're in for a HUGE sticker shock.
nothing within walking, light commuting is reasonable. Figure 800K and up.
It all depends on if you have kids/family or plan to have one, if you want to commute, etc.
Redwood Shores/City is $$$$$$$$
mtnbound 05-25-2003, 02:15 PM if you're looking to buy, check out this site: mlslistings.com
As DakarDave says, check those cities, as well as San Mateo, Burlingame, and San Bruno.
You will be looking at $650k+ for anything with more than 2bdrms, in a decent area.
If you're looking to rent, take a look at craigslist.org.
billycorgan 05-25-2003, 05:07 PM Redwood Shores? You must be loaded! Foster City, San Mateo, Redwood Shores, etc. is around $700,000-$800,000 and upwards for a decent home. Hillsborough is disgustingly expensive. They're mainly for retired people or for people who do insider trading. I live in San Mateo and my mother bought a nice 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom, 2 car garage on a hill with a nice view of the peninsula overlooking Foster City for only $550,000. Only problem was that it was a 'salvaged' home.
Good luck, and welcome to the Bay Area, the best place in the world.:D

Those apartments kick ass. Right next to a kickass shopping center next door.

GQ_Style 05-26-2003, 05:10 AM Try Belmont or San Carlos. You may find some affordable ($1200) apartments in that area since prices have been falling lately. You can get a lot of "1st Month Free" places too.
Are you driving your Dakar M over here? I work near oracle and drive by several times daily. I'm in a Violet M3. Wave if you see me, I'll already be waving.
hoog23 05-26-2003, 11:26 AM Thanks All,
No, I don't work there yet. Just in initial interview stage.
Prices are high in NYC metro area (and still climbing) - but not quite that high.
One issue for me is that my wife is a teacher here and I understand that CA is laying off teachers - so beginning to think that even with a nice raise + some type of cost of living difference (15-20%?) the move may not be worth it, especially if she can't find a job.
Although its a great position which I wouldn't find back east.
Would be a great place for the conv and I would love to do a cross-country drive.
billycorgan 05-26-2003, 02:48 PM Well, for high school, they are laying off teachers who are relatively new. But, teachers in the San Mateo Union High School District get $15,000 more annual income than the surrounding districts...about $50,000+ a year. I'm assuming your wife is a high school teacher?
CA state governer is deciding whether or not we should proceed with budget cuts, which will ultimatley cut $30,000,000 in the education department and place it in the prison budget. So far there's been no word.
But I think you should come to CA. It's a nice change, and you get three hours of your life back.:stickoutt

djkiko 05-27-2003, 05:48 PM hey Bono where you live in Mateo, I have never seen your ride before and I lived in that city for 19 years(just recently moved to Redwood City). If you live on the hills of Mateo then I am sure you are somewhere close to my old house. I used to live close to Aragon on barneson. I LOVED living in Mateo and I wish I could come back! Hey Hoog23, if your not so sure about moving this way then before you even start looking for houses you should come down and visit first. If you like what you see then make the move down here and worry about the money situation after you know you will be happy over here. From what I have heard a lot of the schools around here are looking for teachers especially right now since it is summer. Good Luck and if you do come down this way be sure to make a post in here saying you want to have a meet so we can show you the bay the way we see it!
djkiko 05-27-2003, 05:50 PM Oh yeah, if you are going to be working for Oracle then talk to them about housing because my friend's mom works for them and she got some help from them when she first started working for them. She loves it there!
hoog23 05-27-2003, 08:50 PM OK - good idea. I'll let you know how things turn out.
Also, don't want to start counting my chickens just yet....
billycorgan 05-27-2003, 09:16 PM I live in 42nd Ave., near the border of Belmont. Aragon is the school I go to now. I graduate next year. And yes, San Mateo is the shit. How does your ride look like?

iwannadinanm3 05-27-2003, 09:27 PM summer school teachers don't get paid for shit around here. And yes, they are laying off a few teachers for sure all around california schools, grades k-12, even the community colleges. But i said a few, and a whole lot of teachers have gotten "cinch" notices that alert them that they will not be gauranteed a job next year, and the deadline for that was sometime around march 11th, so nearly all those teachers who got "cinch" notices in march, currently stand as though they are going to HAVE a job for next year. only a few of the newer ones will not.
But with that said, good luck having your wife get hired. All this crap about teachers laying off was a huge controversial thing at our school (i'm sure it was in pretty much ever school in california) so like someone suggested before, come down and visit, and go ask some school districts what their status is with teachers.
djkiko 05-27-2003, 11:16 PM Whoa! You go to Aragon, I just graduated from there 2 years ago. Weird! Do you kick it with Marcus at all(drives 94' 325is) and who the hell is Balto kid that drives a 2003 m3..... Spoiled ass *&*^#%.
Anyways I drive a black on black 94' 325is and I am getting a brand new paint job and M kit put on as we speak. My name is Chris Lapuyade, who are you?
Echo3Dawg 05-28-2003, 09:22 PM Aragon eh? I graduated from SMHS last year (c/o '02) and currenty attend CSM.
(You guys can crack jokes about the portables now
:) )
billycorgan 05-29-2003, 01:55 AM Echo:
Heh, you're not alone. They're tearing down half of Aragon for reconstruction. Next year half of the classes will be in portables and half in whatever is left in the school:help
dj:
Does Marcus drive the gray 325is with Mutec rims? I think we talked a couple of times but I don't kick it with him.
Fuckin' Balto...there were several rumors on how he got that car. First one I heard was that his dad won $500,000 in the lottery or something. Other one I heard was (and most likely true) is that his dad's a drug dealer.:laugh I think he crashed it; now he drives his beater now.
Wow Chris you're ride is going to be sick. We gotta kick it sometime. I just bought a Rieger Infiniti I kit and it's going on in a couple of weeks. New rims, too.:) BTW my name is Andrew Cajita.
Echo3Dawg 05-29-2003, 03:01 AM Nice Sophomore yearbook picture, Andrew...haha, I have my friends Aragon 2002 yearbook. :boobies

Oh shit heh, small world...My bro got the Honda because he chose the Honda, he's still a ricer, lol. I had the choice of a new Honda or a used BMW. I definitely chose BMW. Yeah man I'll tell him that we ran into each other. Heh yeah I still play the piano, but not as much. Most of my time and money goes to my precious car. There's no time for piano.:( We should kick it sometime...I don't think I remember you. My aim is 'alpinaskyline' so hit me up...late.

3 interviews later (the last one was 3 freaking hours on the phone) they are finally checking my references.
The last guy I spoke with made it sound like I could work remote from NY and just travel for some mtgs, etc.
