Some of you have probably seen some of my earlier posts about a head gasket problem on a ’00 M Roadster. About a couple of months ago, there was some moisture build up observed on the inside of the oil fill cap and around the inside the valve cover. There is no significant evidence of water in the lower end, although the oil does look a little funny. The engine runs and sounds fine, but I believe the moisture is indicative of a problem and therefore have not been driving the car. (It has always been a second vehicle).
I have talked with a few shops about the cost of the repair, and as expected, cannot get much of a quote without tearing everything apart. The best guess I got was around 10-20 hours of labor and $1000-2000 in parts.
The car runs as it is, and has not been driven, other than to move it into and out of the garage and driveway when needed. I am offering it for sale as is, and my hope is that someone who has the interest and time would rather buy it as it sits and do the repair themselves and maybe either build it up, or earn some sweat equity.
The car itself is in excellent condition, with 46k miles. It is completely stock, adult owned and never tracked. The body is perfect, with no paint work or accidents, other than some damage to the spoiler that was the result of a careless valet. The top is in excellent condition, with no yellowing of the rear window. The blue/black leather interior shows some wear of the driver’s bolster, but is otherwise perfect. The wheels have no curb rash and tires are about 60%. All in all, it is a very nice car.
The going price for these seems to be around 16-17k, and probably this would be towards the higher end given the condition and mileage. I am putting it up for sale at 12k, which allows 4-5k for the head gasket and spoiler repairs. I think this is a good estimate of the retail price for these at a shop. Obviously, if the buyer did these themselves, they would say a fair bit.
Feel free to ask any questions you may have and let me know if you would like specific photographs. The car is in the California Bay Area.
