I have been driving manual transmission for the past 15 yrs. In my 08 335xi when I change from 1st to 2nd it is always a bumpy transition. The higher I let the rps go the smoother it is. How many rpms do some of you change gears at. If I change before 3500 it is very bumpy.

Its actually pretty tricky to drive these things perfect. I pretty much always shift at 3500 rpm or above.

If you like quick, clean 1-2 upshifts, there will always be some roughness. There's just no way around the physics. But if you want more of the "auto" feel, just do exactly what the auto does...gas and slip it a bit when going into 2nd. Just a little bit is enough to smooth out the transition. Also, time it so that you're not letting off the gas too early when shifting out of 1st. Maintain that throttle right until the moment you clutch-in.

I think the tendency (at least mine until I got used to it) is to let off the gas to much (revs drop too much). If you just let off slightly, clutch in and out quickly, it will be smoother.

Try double clutching on the upshift from first to second.
