View Full Version : Who's good at cutting stuff with a Dremel?
eternalist 05-22-2008, 08:18 PM Well Im going to install my IC, BOV and Exhaust this weekend. The IC requires trimming the inside of my bumper. I thought cool, no sweat. Well I went out and bought a Dremel, but I think Im having second thoughts... lol
Anyone have experience with this? Willing to help me out and trim this bish?:devillook
deafboy 05-22-2008, 08:21 PM If I was closer I would...
dremel ftw.
eternalist 05-22-2008, 08:25 PM You defiantly live far! I was like wth is Blaine. I Google'd it and I was like, that's Canada!
mitchelrl 05-22-2008, 08:26 PM Hmmm, would I have to come down to Tacoma? Or would you be able to come up here?
eternalist 05-22-2008, 08:27 PM If I come up there I would have to install my IC there as well.
scollins 05-22-2008, 08:28 PM Did you get the dremel with variable RPM? I'd run it at the lowest possible RPM. Dremels are convenient tools, but only occassionally are they ever the exact right tool for the job. Go slow and with a very steady hand!

get something to practice on?
eternalist 05-22-2008, 08:31 PM Yeah its a variable speed model, just never used one before... lol
Veedubbvr6 05-22-2008, 08:33 PM yea, definitely go slow until you get more comfortable...if anything, trim off little by little to make sure you don't take off too much if it's not needed...
BKHuff 05-22-2008, 08:35 PM practice on some random stuff laying around that you don't need anymore or something
eternalist 05-22-2008, 08:42 PM I should have just bought a fricking saw :)
SiGmA 05-23-2008, 01:55 AM Uh DREMEL what were you thinking? Have you used one before? Obviously not. Cut off wheel worked really well for me.
eternalist 05-23-2008, 02:15 AM Uh DREMEL what were you thinking? Have you used one before? Obviously not. Cut off wheel worked really well for me.
Huh? What are you talking about? :confused A Dremel has a cut off wheel attachment.
everycredit 05-23-2008, 02:23 AM Have Dremel, am a surgeon, and live in T-Town.
...would probably charge you a surgeon's rate.
eternalist 05-23-2008, 02:26 AM Not looking to pay anyone. Maybe lunch or some beers. I dont need anything else, just something sliced off. Really people youre making this difficult... lol

I was being sarcastic about the surgeon's rate....
Maybe 1/4 the rate. Still would be five digits...

Decimated.
SiGmA 05-23-2008, 10:41 AM lol. I was meaning a grinder, air powered, often called a cut off wheel..

Chipped B6 05-24-2008, 08:26 PM what kind of work..?
Alaska? damn
Doug C 05-25-2008, 01:15 AM well It looks like GAM3BOY and I are going to be doing his springs next weekend so I might be able to help you out at the same time?
eternalist 05-25-2008, 01:18 AM I already installed it today. Ran into some other problems though. My car is out of commission for awhile. Friggin broke a nipple off my intake manifold and probably have to replaced the whole thing. Plastic intake manifold FTMFL!
Doug C 05-25-2008, 01:25 AM hobby shop has some really great glue that can probly fix it temp or perm! p.m. for more info if needed
eternalist 05-25-2008, 01:34 AM I used some of that plastic weld crap, but either way I want to swap out the whole thing. I dont want it in the back of my mind, always wondering if that glue is going to break. I swear how the frig is BMW going to use that stupid plastic nipple there?
A few other folks on e90post had the same situation. $900 bucks at the dealer :(
I hear another common fix is to just fill that hole, and tap a metal fitting in there.
Doug C 05-25-2008, 01:40 AM would'nt be that hard.. do you have any pics? I have machine shop hook up, my friend could probly build a better pice for a looooooooot cheeper than that
eternalist 05-25-2008, 01:42 AM No pics. But its just a standard vacuum nipple for a BOV/Boost signal. I know theres self tapping nipples you can buy. Just wondering how reliable they will be in the long run.
Doug C 05-25-2008, 01:48 AM Done right? 100% it should have the same sealing as orriginal if not better. as another question can that part be fully removed?
eternalist 05-25-2008, 01:52 AM Its the same manifold as on the E46 BMWs I beleive, well same style plastic manifold. So I would have to take all the crap off, probably a bitch to do.
Doug C 05-25-2008, 01:57 AM If you think about it you have to do it anyway but fixing it would be alot cheeper and would do the same as replacing it and quicker.. P.S. would'nt take too long i don't think, not that big of deal
eternalist 05-25-2008, 02:02 AM I just wonder how hard it would be, since I have to take off all that drive by wire stuff. Other than that I assume it would be straight forward. But if Im taking off the manifold might as well change it out completely. :(
GAM3BOY 05-25-2008, 02:16 AM LOL, have fun today???
Your car looks nice in my garage :stickoutt
eternalist 05-25-2008, 02:33 AM Had fun up until that point. :(
Well while reading around I found out that its a pretty common occurrence on e90post. And a $900 mistake for being careless. I shouldve just cut that bitch off like I thought about. Sounds like the car will run, so I guess Ill be able to drive it home at least while I order a new manifold or decide to just rig up mine.
GAM3BOY 05-25-2008, 02:36 AM $900!!!!!!
Ouch, did you find any aftermarket ones? Maybe a polished manifold?
eternalist 05-25-2008, 02:38 AM The manifold itself is only like 400-500ish. The labor is another 400-500. I tried looking for an aftermarket one. Nothing available. Even the stock one is hard to get.
GAM3BOY 05-25-2008, 02:40 AM Can't you just install it yourself?
Or do you not trust yourself anymore after today's fiasco? :stickoutt

I would totally do it myself, but the drive my wire stuff scares me. Theres a lot of stuff there, and with out a service manual I have no clue if moving those sensors messes anything up.

I'm about to crash man, gimme a ring in the morning ;)
everycredit 05-25-2008, 06:02 AM Should have went with my surgeon's rate--your manifold would be just fine...

STFU already.
deafboy 05-25-2008, 02:18 PM Buy a manual....lol.
it'll pay for itself in the long run.

Yeah I plan on getting one. Just never got around to ordering one.
My car is fine for now. Went with the cheap quick fix or epoxy for now. Plan on ordering the manifold and swapping it out.
everycredit 05-25-2008, 11:54 PM STFU already.
Lol... if you took me at face value, you could have bought several new manifolds for my fee.... :)
