Apparently it will cost an arm and a leg to fix the moon roof in my car (labor cost to remove head liner, etc.). Has anyone else broke their moon roof and fixed it themselves? As soon as I get the car back from the shop, I can look into it some more. I was told that it may be a broken cable or something like that.

Well if you are nice to me I might be able to help. LOL. I have redone the sunroof in both my cars. One was a total rebuilt and the other involved gates/slide rails/adjustment. We can hook up at Euro Sunday in Sacramento and I can give you a hand. First we can trouble shot and ID parts that need to be replaced. Next trip up we can do the work. A good reason to get the car out for a run. It is a PITA but not hard just time consuming. The sunroof is like a piece of art. Emaill me off line and we can set up a meet. I have the tools and the knowledge to help. Cheers from the other Carter

Does it not shut all the way, or won't open? More info, plz

I was supposed to pick up the car on 5/23 from the shop, but they are still waiting for a piece to put it all back together. As soon as I receive it, I will play with it to see exactly what is wrong with it.

A little history: my dad just gave me the car with a blown motor and I am getting a used motor in it. I haven't played with the car yet, but I know the sunroof is not working.

What's wrong with it! Totally not working (motor)! What!

I had my Headliner totally replaced! Great Job ($325). Motor + Labor!

...probably getting a $4000 sunroof to match the $9500 used (180,000 mile) motor...

Hey V12 E31, I thought you were trying to get rid of that car? Have a change of heart???

i am leaning toward a complete delete. or a moonroof.
but i guess the delete will be cheaper

you can replace almost all the parts on the sunroof without taking off the headliner, but if you are replacing the whole assembly you have to. i have one if you looking forward to spend some money....:D

i am sick and tired of the bmw sunroofs rusting...i don't know why only they will rust...maybe they are made in japan.
but anyhow, having no sunroof and more headroon would be cool. (i am 6'2").
or having a moonroof that wont rust and lets some sun in.
two nice options

No matter what thread you reply to, you are complaining about this or that on the 8 and /or BMW in general. What gives? The best thing for you to do is to sell your parts car and take the proceeds and buy a mini like your girlfriend has - I hear they are quite relaible (unlike an 850...)

i am not going to post here anymore.
this is not high school and this should not be a lobby for the lamest responses and insults to other members.
i just wished you would be this outspoken in real life.
but then you are all quiet and low key.
it is in your little home ,where you get out your little orange box and
turn into a roaring keyboard tiger...
what a silly boy.

I am still getting rid of the car. I don't want to take the chance that the engine gives out again. I want to fix the sunroof so I can get more money for the car. I figure the more things that's wrong with the car, the more the buyer can bargain with me.

at one point (I think you are already there) you will be spending more money "fixing" things than you would get back after these things are fixed.
Example: If the sunroof doesn't work- deduct a couple hundred from the asking price. You will most likely spend that on just the parts alone - not even talking about labor here - especially not after what you posted regarding the cost of a high-mileage used motor. You have to take a good long look and decide whether to cut bait or fish...

... if you were going to keep the car to drive and enjoy for yourself - I would invest the money to have a nice ride.
