Hi ther, finally found out where you 850 fellas hang out! I have a '94 M70 850ci.
My engine at idle is making a 'tappets' style noise, like a ticking sound. Is that just a tune up issue?
By the way I would love some advice on upgrading my car, so I hope youguys don't get sick of me.
I just bought 18 inch wheels and some nice lowprofile tires, replaced the spring and struts and I am generally cleaning up the car.

All your cars look amazing. any Austin or Texas owners on the site?

No disrespect in this, but I think you have a 5.4L M73 motor, there are a lot of m73 owners here that will help you, welcome.

Ticking sound is somewhat normal. What kind of oil (viscosity) are you running in that engine?

Dallas , TX here.

Could it be sticky lifters? Just a thought.

The first thing you should do is also the simpliest one, change your oil. This will most likely get rid of your problem my friend.

Well thanks for the welcome. As for my engine, I don't know much yet, but I do know that the 4 speed auto was a M70 yes? If thats the case then I believe I have an M70 5.0L non aluminium engine. I think from reading I have done the M70/M73 were both produced in 1994, hence the confusion over engine types. If there is a way I can check specifically on my car I'd like to know. Its in the shop getting body work done right now. But next week I can post some picks and get back under the bonnet to check specifics.
I really appreciate the fast response and you guy have done just shit hot mods and restorations, I can't wait to waste all this money that I don't have!

a couple of things:

there is no "non-aluminum" V12 - they are ALL aluminum
check the DK motors, if they have a black housing (BOSCH) they are on an M70, if the housing is aluminum (SIEMENS) they are on an M73.

I will check that on Friday when I pick up my car.

what are the last 7 digits of your VIN? Can tell you if you have a M70 or M73 with that

Mine is a silver 840. The red one you have seen is dead. During the big storm last week he drove through some high water and the engine swallowed it. The motor is out and insurance is saying total loss. They won't let him have it back without a salvage title so its gone.

I haven't seen your 850.

What part of town are you in. I am a total knob when it comes to mechanicals but its cool to meet someone in austin who has 8 series.
Thats a shame about red 8, i wonder how you approach the insurance company to get it out of salvage..I need lotsa parts ;)

The red one is an 840. The insurance company is picking it up from BMW of Austin soon. I am not sure of the company. It is a 95 with about 90k miles. It is clean.

Hipshot -

I am in north Austin. Parmer and 35 area. Where are you?

Hipshot....Have you found the location of the sound yet? If it is coming from the little black box type cover at the Driver side Firewall, it is normal sound of the Aux. Water Pump.

If it is coming from the engine, you MAY want to try SeaFoam.

There are 3 kits posted and i also have an issue with cold startups, sometimes i get ticking in the morning It drives me nuts , but as soon as the oil pressure goes up its gone.So i will more than likely get one of these ,i read a bit and when you shut off ur key the solinoid shuts closed and keeps the oil under pressue in the bottle and as soon as you turn on the key it opens up and repressures the oil system.

Need an oil change, and yeah since the weather warmed up the noise has dissipated at start up.

The pre oilers sounds like a useful installation. Has anyone on this 8 Series site installed one? If so, which of the aforementioned units is preferable and where is the connection to the oil gallery made? The Syntheticoilguy vs Autoenginelube seem to operate on different principles.
