View Full Version : E38 Headliner Mod Pics.......
740ibimmer 05-13-2008, 04:33 PM :buttrockHi their guys. i wanted to share one of my mods that i did in the e38. this car is getting a complete makeover inside and out. inside are the photos of a black anthracite headliner with grey accents. " i love the contrast it gives" only the headliner is done so far as i am waiting on more adhesive to arrice. i will be doing the b-pillars front and back. also the inside pillars that hold the seat belts.
p.s never mine the sunroof area. im putting a 1 1/2 inch leather strip around the border. i think it will give it a great look. thanks for looking.
these are the before shots. "silver grey after shots "anthracite black"

I think colin's already taken. sorry :stickoutt
So, 740ibimmer since you're modifing your interior alot, you seem like the right person to ask, would you know anything about dying the seams of my tan leather to black, in order to achieve a highline e38 effect, i.e. a black stitched tan leather look?

yes this is one way to do it. the piping around my front sports and rear seats are getting this done. it will be done in white. and my headrest all four will have just the middlw in white along with the butt area and back area done in white also. im really striving for something unique yet beautiful and attractive.
p.s but yes tape everything off. and get to work. it will turn out nicely.

A full kit for black? If so how much? Hhmm why not go with the Alpine white? Or are you trying for something custom and a bit more unique?

yes custom. not overdone tho. it will be very tasteful. not some outlandish color .

maxxon19s 05-14-2008, 08:35 PM So I am guessing you did the headliner yourself? I am actually working on mine lil by lil each day after work.(doing black suede) I got the main part up but I am still doing the pillars ect... Did you strip it down to the bare or did you lay it over the old headliner?

Yeah, black. leatherique? where do i buy that from, are you not using the full kit? i'll buy it, or is it more then i need?
dophineh 05-14-2008, 09:06 PM and by seams, i mean piping.
04SSHD 05-14-2008, 09:12 PM you can get leatheriqe from their website
740ibimmer 05-14-2008, 11:10 PM So I am guessing you did the headliner yourself? yes i did......
I am actually working on mine lil by lil each day after work.(doing black suede) I got the main part up but I am still doing the pillars ect... Did you strip it down to the bare or did you lay it over the old headliner? what! i feel insulted. you dont lay headliner material over your old material. first you will never be able to get it to fit right; once you put in back in for installation.
and by seams, i mean piping.
no duh.... lol
Yeah, black. leatherique? where do i buy that from, are you not using the full kit? i'll buy it, or is it more then i need?
www.leatherique.com (http://www.leatherique.com) or send me $100 and i will send it to you.
Blue32 05-14-2008, 11:31 PM looks good. that should be an interior option from the factory

it use to be. hell they even have a oem black headliner over in germany for :shifty$900 . what i mean is in germany they make them this way:confused. and you can get them from the stealers for this amount. but although i was scared as hell to do this:eyecrazy. i was still more motivated to do it; then seeing that big huge bubble in the back of my headliner.:D
m5james 05-21-2008, 06:59 PM which one are you emplying.
I want that smaller wheel....i've seen it done a few times - just another wishlist item to empty the bank account with ;)
ripp222 07-09-2008, 10:25 AM 740ibimmer,
1. what brand adhesive did you use on your headliner? I've got some Rochford Supply adhesive right now for a different project.
2. did you spray the headliner material only or the headliner backing only? or both then press together?
3. if you go non OEM headliner, I assume you will lose some padding. the E38 material has more foam backing than I've seen on any other BMW. comments?
dophineh 07-09-2008, 11:11 AM www.leatherique.com (http://www.leatherique.com) or send me $100 and i will send it to you.
Do I need the whole kit, is it black? I really want to do this mod, (black piping) but I'm afraid I'll mess something up
740ibimmer 07-09-2008, 05:50 PM 740ibimmer,
1. what brand adhesive did you use on your headliner? I've got some Rochford Supply adhesive right now for a different project.
hey their. i have included a pic of the adhesive that you should be using. it does matter.... please notate this. "Headliner Express" charges $38.50 for 2 :eek:cans. what a rip. he screwed up when he sent mine. instead of him sending it. he had it sent from the retailer:). guess what; the retailer included invoice. so i called them up and ordered more at $6.40 per can. :redspotYESSSSSSSSSSS......... I am also including the #### (412)462-3900 "Three Rivers Supply Co. they r located in Homestead, Pa
2. did you spray the headliner material only or the headliner backing only? or both then press together?
just spray it on the object not the material. otherwise to much would allow it to soak through. thats a no; no.........:nono
3. if you go non OEM headliner, I assume you will lose some padding. the E38 material has more foam backing than I've seen on any other BMW. comments?
no this is not true. BMW uses a 1/8th foam backing and all other moestly american car uses a 5/8 foam backing. so if you r doing a new headliner install; please use the 1/8 otherwise you can risk ruining your sunroof if avail.... the 5/8 foam backing is to thick.
Do I need the whole kit, is it black? I really want to do this mod, (black piping) but I'm afraid I'll mess something up
yes you need the dye, prepping agent. remember to tape everything off that wont be resprayed. actually this is not the most practical and logic way to do it. the best way would be to take you seats to a interior specialist and have them take the seat covers off. remove stiching and insert a already black leather piping. it very inexpensive.
