I forgot all that they check for the Hawaii inspection, but do they do emissions test? I am thinking of getting rid of the cats and putting in the AA track pipe, but don't know if I'll pass Hawaii inspection when I move back there.
I'm exempt this year in CA and hopefully will be back in HI before the next smog check...soooo:devillook

There's no specific emissions test. However, depending on where you go and the person doing the inspection, they may ask about whether you have a Reconstruction permit, especially if the car obviously has a lowered suspension and/or +2 wheel fitment. Don't think they would say anything about aftermarket exhaust. Some safety check inspection stations won't give the inspection if they know the vehicle should have a Reconstruction sticker/permit.
Hopefully you have access to someone you know.

from what I understand, an aftermarket muffler/exhaust system can be installed without a reconstruction permit...however, like what 98M3_4 said, if you have other modifications, you will need to go to the recon station to get a permit before they'll look at your car for a safety inspection. If you go to the station and they dont pass you, let me know and I can help you get the sticker.

I just tell them that my 19"s are a "plus 1" fitment :)
They never say anything because they've never seen a MCoupe before. Never had a problem with the M3 either and it was also lowered. Every once and while you will find an ass, but take a clean car to a shop, be friendly with the guys and you will get your safety sticker without too much trouble.

they have changed the laws however if im not mistaken so that your rims cant be larger than stock at all. before you could go 1 inch bigger, but i believe now its a must to stay at stock...i went to get my safety check, told the guy my car came with stock 16's and so i went one inch larger...he told me i had to have 16s...damn old man...of course i just got my sticker later anyway...

They didn't change the law. At least not yet. Some inspection stations still believe that any modification requires a recon. Most of the other places will staill allow 1" over stock. Recon inspection states you can have 1.5" over stock without any need for an affidavit. Anything larger and you will need the affidivit to prrove that your rolling diameter is whitin +/- 7% which is real easy to be within just places like Eurosport charges you $40 for this papar. Strict stations is one reason why I keep all my visual stock parts before I got my recon. It takes about half hour to replace the parts and then you don't have to worry about some stict guy turning you away.
