View Full Version : GC coilovers on...some shoes to match.
2DYE4 05-12-2008, 07:29 PM So Ive been playing around with the coilovers with my different wheels, spacers so on. Here are some pics, some you may have seen some are new, Im still debating front toe/camber settings in front. I need to take some w/o the turbine covers on, too...soon.
Which do you prefer?

Im rollin the turbines hard right now, looks killer low and with the stagger in the back, I took out the fin inside the turbine in the rears to make the center sit in further to make it look deeper.
Whatchoo think guys?
screwbiedoo15 05-12-2008, 07:45 PM Sorry I can't be of any help, I like them all too much!
eightynine535 05-12-2008, 07:46 PM looks good. wow it's really low...scrape much?
SC David 05-12-2008, 07:50 PM Damn, that's sick as hell. I can't decide for you either...I think you'll have to send each set my way so I can test them for a few weeks on my car. I think it just needs some projector headlights to give the front end some life. Looking seriously good though.
tonyroc14 05-12-2008, 07:51 PM style 5's allthe way, esspecialy since i saw it in person at the fest. Allthough i do like those acs'
Do you have final offsets (front and rear) on some of these setups?
PorscheH6 05-12-2008, 07:51 PM Hmm, just not feeling the Turbines. Call me biased, but Style 5's FTW.
2DYE4 05-12-2008, 07:51 PM looks good. wow it's really low...scrape much?
not yet...Ill probably adjust it up two turns each corner just so I don't.
Car handles so much better, next up is the M5T rear bar:buttrock
offthewall 05-12-2008, 07:52 PM im gonna have to go with the style 5's. as much as i love those ACS's i think 17's are too small of wheels to compliment ur sick ass drop.
E30SPDFRK 05-12-2008, 07:55 PM I think that with the car that low, you need the smaller sidewall of the style 5's. Is that the lowest you can go on the front?
Lee in Ottawa 05-12-2008, 07:57 PM style 5's for me.
What GC kits is that? Did you get the sleeve kit and make it fit or did you get everything included? Shortened koni's, strut housings etc?
Sam Son 05-12-2008, 08:04 PM LOVE Turbines
atlfokus 05-12-2008, 08:08 PM they all look sick with that drop, style 5's for me tho
2DYE4 05-12-2008, 08:17 PM Do you have final offsets (front and rear) on some of these setups?
Style 5's are 20et in front and 7et in rear, you can def run a 10-15mm spacer in front but I only have 20mm, rears fit perfect 245/40 on a 18x9, can barely fit a piece of paper in the wheel well...no rubbing at all.
Msystems final ET are 5et front and 22 rear.

already running 235/40 and 245/40, and I still have about 2in in front and 4in in rear, they put the extra long sleeve in the rear.
style 5's for me.
What GC kits is that? Did you get the sleeve kit and make it fit or did you get everything included? Shortened koni's, strut housings etc?
I bought an extra set of front housings off ebay and took them to GC, dropped them off and they lowered the hats so I still have my OEM set up to swap back over, it's the lowered hats and shortened Konis.
e34 life 05-12-2008, 08:52 PM turbines, lemme have those 9"rear style 5s!!
93FIM5 05-12-2008, 09:00 PM What spring rate did you go with and how is the ride and handling, thinking this is my next upgrade.
I like the ACS because of the meaty tires. The first pic is SICK!!!!... Style 5's a close second.
jhower08 05-12-2008, 10:42 PM Car looks great with either of the three, but Im digging the ACS's right now. You don't see many sets of that particular wheel anymore, especially on a slammed e34!
tonyroc14 05-12-2008, 11:17 PM i say you give me you wheels.
MMmmmpower 05-12-2008, 11:21 PM Im liking the style 5's best
E34Mekanik 05-12-2008, 11:48 PM That's it. I want an M5. That will be the only cure for my sickness, because I couldn't decide what to do with my 535 before this thread.
E34nication 05-13-2008, 01:55 AM acs all the way. hot.
lilxyoshi 05-13-2008, 02:15 AM wow, absolutely stunning
keep the acs IMO, but its your car so do with it as you please!
Blutarsky 05-13-2008, 02:20 AM too low. otherwise
lilxyoshi 05-13-2008, 02:22 AM too low. otherwise
theres no such thing as "too low"
slammed FTW
themoreyouknow.jpg
Blutarsky 05-13-2008, 02:24 AM i respectully, but wholeheartedly disagree
Monastie 05-13-2008, 03:24 AM ya, I think the back is too low also, and the front just a tiny bit.
I vote for style 5's
de Witt 05-13-2008, 06:53 AM Turbines.
93FIM5 05-13-2008, 07:13 AM Turbines its an M5.
Lee in Ottawa 05-13-2008, 08:08 AM I think I'm leaning towards the turbines too just because there all business.
Also do you have any pics of your coilovers installed or assembled?
Dark Schnitzer 05-13-2008, 10:12 AM Wow Jason....thats a tough one. Of course you already know I have always felt the turb's made E34's look like a foreign taxi.;)
I like either the ACS or the 5's...........it would be perfect with the tires JUST starting to be covered by the fenderwell. It would even have a slight rake of badness to it.:evil2
Cheers,Vinny
RickSloan 05-13-2008, 10:25 AM I'm def going to have to vote style 5's
Looks sick with all 3 tho, did you say the turbines have covers??? does that center come out and you have a sick dished steely to make your M5 look like a monster!?!?
Grim Reaper 05-13-2008, 11:00 AM Turbines... ACS a very close second
zubbie 05-13-2008, 11:06 AM Actually the only time I have liked turbines on an e34. Too low for my tastes but I can appreciate the look and the extreme drop is why the turbines work IMO.
ingardj 05-13-2008, 12:03 PM Def. style 5 with that drop.. !!
What camber are you running now? I think it is a bit too low, especially if you haven't added spacers between the strut and control arm to maintain an angle. You will lose camber under load cornering. If it is going to be a street car only, I would run about 2 degrees negative up front and stock toe settings. The toe settings will dictate tire wear more than camber. I have Dinan springs and fixed plates and I have about 1.8-2.0 up front and 2.6-2.7 in the rear just from lowering. So, I would imagine you are close to 3.0 in the rear. You can adjust toe in the rear but not camber unless you add the KMAC kit.
With 255/40/17's (slightly shorter than stock)

With 245/40/18's (slightly taller than stock):

mottati 05-13-2008, 12:48 PM turbines....
235/255 with staggered. You'll like the m5t rear bar.
Alpine535i 05-13-2008, 01:16 PM Wow, your car looks sick! I would have to say the style 5's, but the turbines without the covers...how does that look? Any of the three are amazing! Nice job. Those turbines make me want to see 18" Alpina's on there.
BMWM5LOVER 05-13-2008, 01:19 PM They all look awesome, however I would opt for the ACS, then turbines(painted black), then style 5's. OR ACS, Style 5's with Gold/Black centers, with Stock turbines in silver.
shragon 05-13-2008, 01:44 PM i like the acs and style 5's. not a fan of the turbines. my pick would be for the ol skool acs'.
Sam Son 05-13-2008, 01:58 PM too low. otherwise
+1
puppypilgrim 05-13-2008, 01:59 PM Style 5s with Turbines a close second. ACS to chunky.
E34nication 05-13-2008, 02:53 PM man i must be the only person on the board that doesn't like the way the 18" style 5's look. Never been a fan.
Sam Son 05-13-2008, 03:24 PM man i must be the only person on the board that doesn't like the way the 18" style 5's look. Never been a fan.
you arent
Blutarsky 05-13-2008, 03:27 PM man i must be the only person on the board that doesn't like the way the 18" style 5's look. Never been a fan.
i much prefer 17's as well
Kilawin 05-13-2008, 03:28 PM Sell them all and get some 18" ACS.
DaveCN 05-13-2008, 03:49 PM What are the rates, diameters and lengths of the springs that you got?
e34moneypit 05-13-2008, 04:58 PM With the drop the way it is it makes the ACS wheels look too small. The spokes are too short and stubby. If they were 18s? I wouldn't even be typing b/c I'd be cleaning up the various fluids from my keyboard.
..The rear turbines are so slick. So sick. Do want.
2DYE4 05-13-2008, 06:02 PM Thanks for all the feedback
Car doesnt feel low at all, it does when you get in or out but front control arms are level with no reverse travel at all, Im still thinking what specs I want to set the front camber to. I opted for the camber plates as well. Also kept the SLS in the rear, just had them weld the hats on the SLS shocks, had the fronts shortened with Konis. Konis are on full stiff right now, feels good, when on full soft it's a little stiffer than stock, much more responsive, probably because it's 3in lower.
Fronts are 430lbs and rears are 250lbs, that's what GC said the SLS will handle safely w/o blowing. When the rear SLS goes out Ill probably get Konis all around with 450lbs all around.
I do plan on raising it up soon, fenders are flush with the top of the front tire now which I like, the rear wheel well is cut lower so it may look like the rear is lower but I assure you it sits level to the ground, I alway love some tuck but Ill probably raise it two turns each corner, im still toying around with them. I have a feeling like the M5T bar will complement the setup perfectly as mottati stated. Ill probably run -2 in front, spaced out 15mm so final ET5 and leave the rear, I dont drive it enough to worry about camber wear and welcome the additional camber in the rear, especially in a hard corner.

And for some reason the ACS do look a bit more chunky, the tires are 255/40 and 265/40 but look more balloonish than the 245/40?? Must be the Toyo TIS tire.

What are the length and diameters?
mottati 05-13-2008, 06:24 PM from a handling standpoint, i'd back off from the full stiff setting on the koni's. Car will handle better with a little less front stiffness.

for sure, I was testing them out at full stiff. Ive done .5, 1 turn, 1.5, 2, etc etc. Feels best around 3/4-1 turn stiff.
And no measurements on the diameter or lenth before I put them on, sorry.

It is printed on the side of the spring. :-)
That close up of the rear is a good one. I think you are 1/4" lower than my car, if not 1/2". Can't you just move the SLS adjuster to adjust height?

you can, it's really easier to adjust the coilovers though than trying to loosen up the little ass clamp on the sway bar, plus every little movement is so drastic. I had it all the way down, then turned it 1/2 turn in the opposite direction and the car was sky high in the rear, put it on ramps and lowered it and it was like I had airbags....pretty cool feature.
DaveCN 05-13-2008, 08:53 PM If you can read the numbers off the spring - or maybe they are on your invoice/pack slip?
The reason I ask is I have a ton of coilover springs available to me - if I maybe have some that are proper lengths/rates for my use, I just need to get some adjusters.
The numbers tell it all, as described in this thread: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=548033&highlight=Ground+Control+Rates
EDIT: And the Turbines, by far, are the best look for that car IMHO.
m60b30530i 05-13-2008, 09:04 PM ill buy the ACS rims they would look HOT on a alpine white E34
E34nication 05-13-2008, 10:48 PM they'd look pretty hot on oxford as well.

I still haven't got around to refinishing my staggered Turbines yet but seeing this pic makes me think about how very cool a set of 9s all the way around might look.... hmmm
That rear turbine looks soo hot.
E30SPDFRK 05-13-2008, 10:52 PM already running 235/40 and 245/40, and I still have about 2in in front and 4in in rear, they put the extra long sleeve in the rear.
Holy shit! Pics of fully slammed asap.
Lee in Ottawa 05-13-2008, 11:34 PM so any pics of the modified strut housing?
MeanM50 05-14-2008, 01:32 AM Turbines or style 5s. I have never seen an M5 look good with turbines on before.
AndrewH 05-14-2008, 09:24 AM ACS def, but I want to know more about the suspension setup. Where did you get it from, how much, any extensive modification???
BigM62 05-14-2008, 10:51 AM Sell them all and get some 18" ACS.
18" ACS Type 2 or 3.Those ACS look like little sausages. The turbines look like they were designed in Instanbul.Style 5 says you can't afford ACS style 2 or 3.:):stickoutt

Lol.....:D...I've got 18" type II's and I STILL can't afford them ! Whats worse ?:confused
I know there is a purist M5 love for those turbines, but d-a-m-n.........they kill the toughness somehow for me.:shifty
Cheers,Vinny
