View Full Version : Painting the "lowers" black? Cheap mod or crap
ingardj 05-11-2008, 05:47 PM Until i find some skirts, preferably ac-schnitzer ones, which will never happen. How would painting them black look like? The one thing i hate the most, is how they look so faded.. (talking about the lower middle section of the car, which i dont know the english word for)
Any thoughts? :rolleyes
SC David 05-11-2008, 05:55 PM I don't know if there is a real word for them, but without skirts the sides are called rocker panels. Painting them wouldn't hurt, but if you're able to, you should look for some sort of trim cleaner to restore them back to their original black color.
ladiesman217 05-11-2008, 05:59 PM yeah a good cleaning will make them black again. I swear they look like they were originally painted with black SEM chipguard or something...
slocar 05-11-2008, 06:00 PM Get some truck bed coating or something and just shoot it over with that. The stuff has the same texture as the stock rocker panel covering, and is the same type of rubbery coating ... I sprayed mine, and they look new again.

Sounds interesting. More info/brand? Is there any gloss in the original rocker panel? And cleaning them only makes them look more pale..
Im a little worried they will be a focuspoint, beeing all newly painted and stuff.. Painting the same color as the rest of the car looks a bit odd, since they arent flat.. i think..
SC David: Thanks ;)
Jcbe34 05-11-2008, 06:44 PM SEM Trim black is a great paint for something like this. Matches the factory black trim color perfectly. I'm pulling the skirts off my '95 540, painting them trim black and putting them on the hellrot car. I love the 2 tone look and I think the skirts will really clean it up as opposed to the bare rockers

Is this what you have done to your car? The rocker panels look very dark.

Well, yes :P It just until i get the skirts. They look so faded and crappy now.. Your car looks good with dark panels..
uk525td 05-12-2008, 07:00 AM funny, i thought about colour coding mine :P make hte car look lower :D

They come from the factory with a ton of chip guard already, that's why they're textured like that.
I'm actually removing it from my car and painting it body color. I have a very light body color (glacier blue) so it will visually lower the car when it's painted to match, rather than the dark color the rockers are already painted.
Skirts on these cars look ok, but the don't hang much lower than the rocker in the first place, they just stick out a little further.

I can't wait to see this, the skirts transformed my car and they just add to the body lines
radiocammbodia 05-12-2008, 01:04 PM go to home depot (or norway equivalent paint supply store) and find some dupont black textured grill paint (like barbecue grill, because it wont chip and lasts forever) and some tractor paint primer, wipe rockers down with a paper towel soaked in acetone (nail polish remover) until spotless, prime and lightly spray with about 4 or 5 coats. Let dry, and spray one more time, and in about 6 hours you'll be set.
Looks great, lasts for years.
