fan clutch....

how hard is this to replace....

also, should my fan be slowly/freely spinning when my car sits at an idle?.

if its not is it the fan clutch that needs to be replaced?

The fan clutch is easy to replace as long as you can hold the water pump pulley down while you turn the 32mm wrench (it is righty-loosey for the fan). There are some tutorials out there on how to do it without using the special fan holder tool. I've done it both ways and now prefer the tool since I cracked a pulley one time using the screwdriver method. Hookem....

The fan is supposed to spin when the engine is running.

The first check for the fan clutch is to see if the fan will wiggle (possible worn clutch bearings). Wiggle in the fan can also be caused by worn water pump bearings, but that can be checked once the fan is off. The next check is to drag a rolled up newspaper against the blade tips with the engine idling. It should be easy to stop the fan when the radiator is cold and much more difficult with a fully hot radiator. Note that in cold ambients, less than 70F, it may be necessary to block off air flow into the radiator to get the fan clutch to engage.

I've use an adjustable wrench (cresent wrench) and a pry bar to keep it from turning. Don't forget it has left handed treads. Rightie loosee and Leftee tightee.
