Any one have experience with the Volvo S60R

I'm torn between buying a 2000ish 540i six speed, or a newer 2005 Volvo S60R. both are nice, both about the same on performance. Not sure if one is more reliable over the other. Any ideas?

The two are vastly different driving experiences. As others have said, try both, then decide.

I can say I think its faster than a 540. has way more tech because its like Volvo's m5, its faster mainly because it has awd. i love the v70r's. I think the s60r is faster than a e39 m5 or can keep up with on. go to youtube fifth Gear did a review on it. and see if you can find the s60r vs m5

used to have a volvo so i read up alot on swedespeed. Id stay away from them, they are reliability nightmares, they never got that car sorted out properly and were always have to do fixes for things that were not designed correctly in the first place.

E39 M5, 400hp, 5.0l V8, 0-60 4.8s(realistically closer to 4.5) Top Gear laptime 1:27
S60R, 300hp, Turbo I-5, 0-60 5.4s Top Gear Laptime 1:35

I like the S60R, and it's a great car, but comparing it to an E39 M5 is just silly.

No one is ever afraid of a guy in a volvo. They should call it vulva, because only pussies drive volvo's. That was a joke i just made up. Seriously though, there is more status in driving a bmw, esp. a 540i. A lot of maintenance on the bmw but if you are going to spend the money, you might as well get the respect and admiration. Volvo's are typically 300,000 mile cars but so are bmw's so no specific advantage there on either side. Get the bmw provided you get a carfax, independant mechanic inspection and you like driving it.

driving a car for "status" and to be "admired" is the reason much of society deems BMW drivers as narcissistic self indulged pricks in the first place. Nothing against you. If that's your thing, more power to you, but I can honestly say when I consider what car to drive, "status" and others "admiring me" are the last things on the list of priority. I just want a car I can love for the sake of driving.

I couldn't agree with you more. I don't like the Fjord Volvos as much as the old ones, but they are alright cars. Drive them both, and decide which one you like better.

That's right, Volvos are slow as hell, even when compared to bigger cars. And even worse to drive. If you buy one have fun with your close relationship with the mechanic and enjoy the constant squeaks and rattles!

A very professional test by Autocar or someone from Britain a while back when the S60 R was new (F1 drivers, Le Mans drivers, touring car drivers etc. as evaluators) came to the conclusion that the Volvo (and the Audi S4) sucked at handling, big time. And not only was the Accord Type S (Not Type R, Type S!) "in a different league" handling-wise, but the FWD 2.4 liter NA Honda with approx 190hp posted an equal laptime to the Volvo!

I had a c70 hp turbo which i mod to add twin turbos. The performance is was okay, but not as fluid and stable as bmw. The car becomes very scary at high speed, and that was in part due to front wheel drive suspension. Plus Volv never really invested themselves in making a well balance machine. Thier cars carry an enomerous amount weight that hinders performance. As far as reliability, the less technology you have and a volvo the longer it will last. Their parts are refugee parts from Ford which always fail prematurely. Things to look out for MAF Sensor, ABS control module, ECT Sensor, turbo wastegate sensor, all ways fail, and I be surprise if you get 30,000 miles out the replacement. In addition, Volvo employs a very tricky pricing strategy when it comes to parts. Basically, you pay triple for volvo parts, but in reality they are cheap ford parts. A MAF sensor will cost about 500.00 bucks and ABS control module is 1,100 bucks, trust me I know. I had to replace my drivers side window regualtor and it was 650.00 for a piece of junk that gave way after a year of use. Overrall, the c70 was good to me-I brought it 300 demo miles and sold it to my friend with 187,000 miles on it.

Dont buy the Volvo

Dont buy the Volvo its not a reliable car!!!!
I bought one with 30K, used it for 3K and had to sell it due its reliability problems, loose 35% of its purchase price. During the 3K had to pay U$1500 for front suspension replacement, U$400 front brake pads replacement, U$800 for oik leak in rear axle (awd)
As Dello was saying the more tech the volvo has the more problems also, and the S60r is turbo, awd, has Bembo brakes, and has a 3 settings suspension!!!
Also during the last and only month i drive it daily, almost everyday an alarm will show in the dasboard!!
The car is fast and has good cornering, i havent owned a 540, but has a problem during acceleration in curvy roads and in short distances, due its turbo lag, you really need to control that cause when you begin accelerating the car doesnt start inmediately, and then the curve hits you need to brake, again and again in a curvy road, i guess that the 540 V8 has a smoother accel curve!!!
Now i own a 320d and i am so happy, been driving it for 3K also havent had any problem or invested a penny. Very powerfull and it isnt a gas guzzler...
Hope it helps

Reliability bad, but worse is the turning circle. I was looking into them for a while as well when I came back to the US. Besides the horrible build quality, they have a ~43ft turning circle. Worse than a Suburban, Escalade, etc. Seriously, kiss parking in tight spots and most usual U-turns goodbye. You have to relearn all your routes. Went elsewhere for my sedan needs.
