Well, I still don't have the BMW, but I have everything else for the swap!

I've decided to part my 92 Mustang, and I'm going to use that motor/trans/etc in whatever e36 I end up finding.

Excitement led me to take an e36 shifter/pocket/etc trim panel from the junkyard, and it's going to be fairly easy to fab up a panel to "correct" the required cuts for the shifter. I'll post up some pics as I put a concept together, and take any guidance you can offer.

Livermoron, while I'm not a CA resident, I can't see why the 87-93 5.0 HO motor in stock form wouldn't easily pass emissions. If you retain the EGR, smog pump, and at least one catalytic converter the car should easily pass sniffer tests. Although, your mileage may vary...

Can't wait to see more info on the e30 5.0 swap. I would definitely be interested in selling my s52 and going for a built aluminum head 5.0!

Here's a vid of my car driving:

More pics on my photobucket here:
http://s33.photobucket.com/albums/d72/65matt/

Here's a guy who put a 5.0 in his 318ti - he's in CA and had to pass smog. Here's what he did:
- Used stock headers turned backwards
- He cut the drivers side frame and hammered the firewall/tunnel to fit the drivers side header
- He moved the steering column over an inch
- He built a 3-joint steering shaft

See his thread here:
http://www.318ti.org/forum/showthread.php?t=24620

I am working with someone on E30 5.0 mounts.

matt,

you've got to give us more than that.

Any updates on how 'finished' your swap is now? Did you get the A/C working, etc.?

Want Moar? Ok.

My car is finished except for a few little bugs. I've got this wierd whistling sound in the intake. This is not related to the swap. I'll probably take the upper intake off and see if there's something in there??? Wierd, I know. I also need to bleed the brakes, they are a little soft. My lower radiator hose is too close to the exhaust, so I want to reroute it with a universal radiator flex hose. I made the exhaust before I fit the radiator - one more lesson learned the hard way.

I have connected the A/C yet but that's the only thing that is not working. Power steering works great, no leaks, heat works, reverse lights, pretty much everything else.

Moar? Here's pics:

Hood closed

Moar engine!

Pass side view:

Good shot of engine:

Front ground clearance - that is the stock crossmember. Yes, I need to tie up the clutch line. If you look closely you'll see the oil pan plug. The car is lowered with H&R springs.

Rear ground clearance with my single 3" exhaust and cheap summit turbo muffler. The car is lowered with H&R springs.

What is the space like on the passenger side in the engine bay (enough room for a turbo mani?), and how did you go about the driveshaft issue.

Heres a pic of pass. side. Driveshaft is simple, take T5 yoke, measure length to diff flange, take yoke & BMW shaft to a driveshaft shop. I think its 2.5" or 2.75", if you want bigger, you'll have to cut out a brace on the DS tunnel.

Matt, aren't you using the stock Mustang (58mm) throttle body, or did you change to another one? The BBK/Edelbrock TB's are notorious for having a prominent whistle.

I changed to an Explorer 65mm TB, 65mm egr spacer, and the inlet on the intake is 65mm. You would think that the Explorer parts wouldnt whistle. I opened the TB to see if there was any 'lips' or something causing the sound. None really, even the gaskets are the right size. The noise is coming right around where the FPR is. I replaced the FPR, checked/unplugged the EGR, the only thing I can think is that something got down in the intake when it was shipped??? The box did have a ton of peanuts in it and stranger things have happened...

I'll ask around and get back to you on this. Stranger things have happened, you're correct, but I don't think there's a foreign object causing the sound.

Any chance of uploading a quick vid of the noise, with the camera around the plenum/tb area? I'm around Ford mechanics almost daily, and they should be able to offer some insight.

I've got some work done on a shifter/console assembly plate. It won't be tough to make something very nice to "fix" this area after modding it for the shifter.

Nice pics, and sounds pretty good too.
I wanna see some V8 Bimmers getting it sideways coming out of a turn or something. Not drifting, just some power oversteer. Bring it!

Nice work! I can't wait to get started on converting my e34 to 5.0l power.

talked w/a mustang guy and apparently a lot of 65mm tb's have whistle issues. I heard it first hand on his '88 fox. Almost has a s/c like whistle.

The whistle is caused by turbulence in the throttle body or just as it enters the manifold if the port match isn't 100% good.

From BBK's Tech Site:

Q. Why does my throttle body whistle?

A. Turbulence in the airflow stream can create a whistle. This can be created by sharp edges in the air intake system, most notably when a larger throttle body is used on a stock intake that has not been 'Port Matched.' The air along the outer edges of the air intake system and throttle body hits the "wall" of the smaller intake manifold, creating turbulence that can cause a noticeable whistle. Other trouble areas can be the small vacuum ports and the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve port which may empty into the main bore of the throttle body. If these edges are square enough at the entry point of the bore, it can create turbulence, and the air will whistle passed it (similar to blowing over the top of an empty cola bottle just right to get it to whistle).

Also check out this thread here for a step by step how to solve this issue. Maybe you can do the same with good results.

I know. I read through this thread the other night, and through all of Rob's thread from e30tech. I'm going to check in on his e30 swap when he gets further along with it.

I'm really interested in the swap! I could sell my s52 and have plenty of $ to swap in the 5.0. I just want to have a verified swap done first, with reliable info that I can work off of.

OK - who wants to guess my dumb mistake? Hint: I pulled the intake off and the rearmost intake port looked much different than the others. Answer tomorrow morning!

Mother of all vacuum leaks - my PCV hose was disconnected! I couldnt see it, but it was sucking in massive air in the back of the intake. No wonder I had problems idling.

Anyway, I hope to get some daylight video this weekend.

Re: E30 5.0 swap - Robert from E30tech is not pursuing the swap due to money or something. I'm working with someone else that is doing their first test fit of the 5.0 motor this weekend.

Just in case anyone wants to know. The 318 rear part of the driveshaft is different from the I6 models. So those of you that have a 318 and plan on using a M3 or any other locked I6 rear end, youre gonna need the rear half of the shaft matching the rear diff. I wouldnt put the 5.0 up against the 318s small case, I pretty sure its torque numbers are only good to the low 200's.

Yeah thats going to be my weakest link. I'm going to just use what I have now and get the car driving. I don't have a led foot so I will just baby it around until I get my m3 rear and driveshaft

I got the new mounts from Matt! Now I can safely mount a 2500lb 5.0 in my car lol these things are BEEFY!! pics up soon!
