DTA does not have a knock input, any decent standalone does not have a knock input. On a properly dyno mapped engine knock should never be an issue, MBT is well before the knock threshold of any engine. You will see a loss in torque well before you reach knock, an engine tuned to peak torque is a very safe tune. The DTA does have AUX inputs but a knock sensor outputs an AC voltage signal and would need to be run through an ADC before entering the DTA. There are aftermarket solutions to do this and output a 0-5v signal based on the knock sensor input. With that 0-5v signal you could have an AUX input table setup in the DTA to pull timing / add fuel vs a 2d table.

Yeah no knock in on DTA. Its useful if adjusting timing on the street after dynoing, but its only as good as you think it is, because with all the shit tapping and exploding in the engine, you can pick up a lot of noise even with decent DSPs. I am not too envious of not having a dedicated knock input because every ECU with knock in is just a "universal" setup and you usually can't tune it in totally. Every motor is different.

Went up and coated the valve cover. Sigh. I originally wanted to just spot coat the area that was ground for the shaving, but looking at all the scratches and marks I decided shit, I might as well just strip the whole cover and re coat it. Also since the big boy oven was in use today I couldn't do strut pieces so I had the time. I found a new strip product that took off the WHOLE cover in like 3 mins. It was pretty remarkable because I have stripped wrinkle black before and since its polyester based its pretty rugged. I was impressed by the new Tal Strip II (its a green gel now).

Anyway, out gassed it at like 425 for an hour and a half and some nice shit came out of the casting again. God I hate these BMW castings. Also this wrinkle black is a new one from Columbia Coatings - its WAY more textured than Eastwood. Loving it. It seems more durable too.

You can barely tell there was a huge thing sticking off of it once! Retrospectively we didn't need to ground/cut so much off. I now have like 2.5" of clearance to the fuel rail but hell, it looks better I guess.

What are you doing with the coil pack studs? Just run a tap over them to strip the PC? Oh and would you be interested in some coating for me? That looks so much better than my wrinkle painted valve cover.

yeah i ran a die down them once home. alternatively you can mask them off but i was semi short on time so i said eff it, and they had been coated previously.

shoot me a pm if you need something, though i hate hate hate doing valve covers, stripping them is the worst.

Thanks cam

I got the intake all tightened up ready for install on the motor tomorrow. I still have to wire the injectors and coils on the car, but thought I'd do some money shotz.

Monay!

You are very wrong.

Just about 90% of forced induction engines are not designed properly to get to MBT at their highest load. So knock comes in before MBT.

Yeah I have a few more things to tidy up though as well. GFs family birthday stuff tonight so I am not sure how far I'll get but whichever. About to head out now.

Yo btw I don't have another rad - I bought a new E34 rad because mine was leaking at the end tank, so I only have the one good one. I do still have the one that was leaking if you wanted to try and fix that ish, but I dunno

Injectors are wired +12 and signal, coils are wired +12v, working on signal, and the ground is next. Wiring SUCKS.

That's my experience with a variety of turbo engines as well. More aggressive cams and a really good flowing head gets MBT and the knock threshold closer together from what I've seen too.

Done-zo! I want to double check it just to make sure I didn't do anything silly (you know, +12v to the ground by mistake type stuff haha).

I guess I'll rescale the fuel map and try starting it this week! Could use a couple wire ties, but for now done is done.
