E36 M3 vs. Swapped EG

Lined up against a clean EG civic (I think) hatch on this 4 lane intersection, where the left two lanes merge and branch off onto the freeway. We're both in the left to lanes and it's obvious that it will be a race to the merge.

Light turns green, we both get pretty bad wheelspin. Second comes and I can't see his car. By the time I'm a little well into third it's time to merge and there was about a car length in between both of us so I moved over into the on-ramp lane.

After that we had to slow down because of another intersection, then comes a sweeping corner heading onto the freeway. I took it fairly easy [because it was about 39 degrees out and I'm not sure how my tires will grip on concrete if I push it too hard] but was still going faster than most people could through the corner, and he was right behind me. Once it straightened out I opened it up until around 100mph and put a little bit of distance on him.

My exit was the next one, and he pulled off with me to chat for a second. He said something like 'that thing rolls out pretty hard'. He seemed surprised that my car pulled on him, and asked what year mine was, so I said 99 and he said oh, it has the 3.2. I asked him what he's running and he said 'just an H22'. I'm not really sure how much power those are good for but I was expecting him to say a turbo something or other. That thing was definitely quick for an NA civic.

My car is quicker than all of my friends' M3's so hopefully they don't come across this guy

Cliffs: M3 > civic by a small margin.

Good story. Curious as to what your mods are. It doesn't surprise me that he hung there with you. The EG isn't a very big car weight wise and the H22 is a DOHC vtec motor that would be considered large in the honda world. Curious if he had anything done to that H22. And depending on what variant H22 he had stock they go from 185hp to 220hp.

Modified stock intake and ASC delete. Weighs 3060lbs. It has always ran really well relative to other e36's I've driven though.

Yeah I probably have a good 1000lbs on him, but also a lot more torque and presumably better gearing. I looked up the H22 and I'm not really surprised he hung in there either (but I did pull on him enough that my car was clearly faster assuming nothing weird happened with his driving).

A guy in my area had one that was completely gutted, i don't even think it had a dashboard. Cam/bolt on h22 swap. A lot of evo's and sti's got embarrassed by that little sucker.

I use to own a prelude with h22 swap.
That car was awesome. Hp wise, they around 200, 220 if you have TypeS.
If it's US spec. then around 190.

I love a clean honda hatch. Good work and stay safe.

You're lucky it wasn't a k20 swapped car, otherwise he would've raped you a new one.

Considering how he kept up, I'd say the motor was fairly stock. If it had cams or head work, and was properly tuned, it would've been a much different outcome.

Nice job nonetheless!

Not this particular one. I was walking away easily when I let off around 100mph on the freeway. Keep in mind my car seriously does run unusually strong.
